Anti-slip treatment
for marble and stone

The anti-slip treatment, for marble or for natural stone in general, is an element to be considered carefully.

The type of treatment to consider, not only depends on the material or its function within the project (external stairs, interior floor, SPA, ...), but also on the degree of security we want to achieve and on the impact that the anti-slip can have on the gloss, on the chromaticism and on the materiality of the natural stone section we want to treat.

Anti-slip treatment: small vademecum

The anti-slip treatment is used to make all surfaces that are walkable safer, which, especially in the presence of humidity or rain, tend to become slippery and therefore dangerous for the safety of people.

Within this sector, the concept that underlies all the activity related to the anti-slip treatment is the so-called 'slip resistance' that refers to two standards: the DIN 51130 related to the intended use and classified with the factor R (R9 for all interior floors and R10 or R11 for exteriors or where there is a small presence of humidity or water: the maximum is R13 but only applies to particular industrial processes) and DIN 51097 for the conformity of the material with Classification A, B and C.

An important concept to underline when talking about slip resistance is that the more the surface is made to become non-slip, the more it becomes rough and difficult to clean. As a consequence, the high degree of anti-slip must be reserved only for surfaces where this is strictly necessary.

Generally, the anti-slip treatment for marble, stone and other walk-over surfaces can be carried out in six ways: laser treatment, milling inlays, transparent anti-slip paint, sandblasting, hydro-sandblasting and chemical sandblasting.

Anti-slip laser treatment

The anti-slip laser treatment consists in producing on the surface of the natural stone or of the agglomerate to be treated from 2 to 5 million micro-holes: these are distributed regularly per square meter and invisible to the human eye.

Since the laser treatment has a slight lightening effect, it is usually recommended especially for light materials even if the result is excellent even on the darker ones, the color change of which is almost imperceptible.
Even the glossy surfaces can be treated without significant loss of gloss.

The degree of slip resistance of the laser treatment is very high since it can vary from an R9 to an R10 which makes it widely used for wet or moist surfaces.

Other advantages of this treatment, in addition to high quality standards and durability over time, are the absence of risk of chemical corrosion and the supply of anti-slip material directly from the manufacturer without further steps.

Anti-slip treatment with milling inlays

The anti-slip processing with milling inlays consists in making inlays of the grooves with a thickness equal to that of the disc (2, 3 or 4 mm) with a variable depth that usually is between 2 and 3 mm.

This process can be carried out on any type of natural stone and its execution depends on the type of result to be obtained for the treated surface (greater or less anti-slip capacity).

Treatment with transparent anti-slip paint

This anti-slip treatment is based on the application of a transparent polyurethane anti-slip varnish which has inside it variable quartz granules.

The advantages of transparent anti-slip paint are the possibility of application on any type of natural stone, ease of cleaning even in depth, being invisible and therefore respectful of the aesthetics of the material.

After the treatment, the surfaces become non-slip meeting the standards of classes R4 to R13 DIN 51130 and classes A / B / C DIN 51097. For this, the transparent anti-slip paint is indicated in many fields of use ranging from boating to floors in marble and natural stone.

In addition to being odorless, the product is certified for contact with food which makes it absolutely harmless to the person and therefore also recommended for baths, pools, beauty farms and in all those places where the anti-slip can come in contact with the skin.

Sandblasting: anti-slip treatment for marble and stone

Sandblasting is an anti-slip treatment that is carried out using a jet of sand (granules of alamandine garnet, one of the hardest minerals that exist - Garnet abrasive) at high pressure.

This processing mode makes the anti-slip surface without modifying its flatness and enhances the naturalness of the stone.

As materials, for the sandblasting we do not recommend natural stones with particular conformations (such as travertine, characterized by a vacuolar structure), and neither dark materials: the treatment, in fact, tends to whiten and this can vary the chromatism from the stone and therefore of the final aesthetic result. This drawback can however be avoided by using the flaming technique.

On the contrary, the very hard stones like the new natural quartzites are ideal for which the micro-blasting is also indicated with a different tool and has a uniform dotting effect.

Hydro-sandblasting as non-slip outdoor treatment

Hydro-sandblasting is an anti-slip treatment that is mainly used for exteriors and is realized through the localized execution of high pressure water jets and shot blasting that, acting together, make the surface rough.

Obviously, the pressure and the speed of advancement are set according to the hardness of the material and the roughness to be obtained.

This method of treatment is used especially for the exteriors because it has a very rough and sharp finish: if you want to use it for the interiors, you should finish working with a brush.

Anti-slip treatment with chemical sandblasting

The chemical sandblasting allows to obtain an anti-slip effect through the creation of a surface with an orange peel-like finish, with more or less deep porosity.

This process is indicated for the processing of limestone, of many types of marble and of both glossy and rough surfaces.

Chemical blasting consists in spreading the product directly on the surface to be treated, waiting for the time necessary to obtain the desired result and then rinsing with running water.
