Brief history of geometric and figurative inlay
The art of marquetry in natural stone and marble was born in Italy during the Roman Empire, thanks to artistic influences from Asia Minor to continue in the following centuries with the installation of floors and walls of various kinds. The true peak of grandeur and beauty, however, is reached in the sixteenth century when Lorenzo de ‘Medici gave life to Florence in the so-called’ Opificio delle pietre dure ‘. Here, in addition to the geometric inlay, we also produce beautiful artifacts with reproductions of drawings, flowers, landscapes that demonstrate the absolute superiority of Italian workers in the design, choice of materials and their work implemented in the strictest rule of ‘ art.
An inlaid floor: the long Italian tradition continues …
A great work of conception and design, choice of materials, cuts and finishes and then finish with a careful installation in every detail, led to the creation of a beautiful oval with geometric inlay for the flooring of the large hall of the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship 707. The work is located in a double-height room which is accessed via a staircase that ends with a podium covered with the same natural stones of the oval: the glance is superb also because the view from above highlights the three-dimensional effect that characterizes the whole worked surface.
Geometric inlay: the choice of materials
The inlay, as the name already says, is an ornamental work that is obtained through the laying of previously shaped material, following a precise design.
For the oval, and to stimulate the three-dimensional effect, two natural stones were chosen in strong contrast from each other: the Graphite, characterized by a deep and absolute black, and the Quartzite Mont Blanc, which next to the whiteness of the surface also gives a lively shine. The feeling of shading, essential to give the feeling of three-dimensionality, is given by the use of Granite Platinum, an eye-catching gray stone that incorporates the texture of Granite Graphite.
Geometric inlay: how it is made
The oval is surrounded by an elliptical perimeter on which the supporting columns are inserted, made of Granite Platinum with a total width of about 500 mm.
The interior floor is made with elements in Granite Platinum, Graphite and Quartzite Mont Blanc of different sizes that make up the square modules.
Obviously, since each element was different from the other, it was necessary to number them so as not to risk an error in the positioning.
The fake joints system
The fake joints system has been used to reduce the number of pieces and make laying easier and more precise. The effect is however homogeneous because, on the floor laid, the false joints are stuccoed exactly like the others.
The cutting precision for the marble inlay
All the almost 200 pieces of the oval have been cut with waterjet technology that uses a jet of water at a pressure that can reach even 7,000 bar. This machine allows a very high cutting precision (in the order of 1 / 10mm for thicknesses up to 40-50mm), without any physical alteration or mechanical deformation of the material.
